This advanced level course will clarify workup options for the most complex TMD patients. Pathological variations in crippled temporomandibular joints will be the primary theme of this seminar. Critical analysis of the literature is covered.Upon completion of this level, participants will have been exposed to virtually all varieties of TMD and should have the skills to diagnose, manage, or know when to refer any TMD or facial pain patient in their practice. All clinical questions, concerns, and mysteries will be fully addressed and answered.
Description: We find that students learn best through repetition and through clinical integration of concepts. The prerequisite course on Joint Based Occlusion covers a tremendous amount of material. This information is enhanced through the additional topics that are presented at this level. As in the other courses taught at PERC, the emphasis is placed on practical clinical application of the material. The core concepts of temporomandibular joint diagnoses and management are reviewed. New concepts of more advanced therapy are covered. The primary objective of this Upper Tier Course is to encourage students to apply and build upon the concepts from the Piper Joint Based Occlusion course. Much of the clinical application of concepts comes from the review and treatment planning of cases which have been carefully selected to illustrate the didactic material. By diagnosing these multiple clinical scenarios students are better prepared to apply the principles of diagnosis and management to their own patients. Upon completion students also will be familiar with the ordering and interpretation of MRI scans. Everything that we could think of to aid participants in the integration of lecture and clinical materials has been done in this course. Many former PERC students have gone on to become the true TMD experts in their respective communities. They have become the doctors that other dentists consult when baffled by a complicated pain or malocclusion patient. These individuals are comfortable in ordering MR scans, and they know what to do for any given joint diagnosis. Many of these PERC graduates honed their expertise in this Upper Tier Course.
